Virtual leadership teams

Commercial knowledge and mindset using my own experience with organisation and leadership development in large, complex businesses

Special challenges and competence requirements in the virtual leadership team

Virtual leadership teams, in which leaders are located in a number of locations and time zones, have become part of daily business life – not just in multinational and global organisations, but also in Danish companies. Decision-making, problem solving and day-to-day coordination and cooperation are moving out of the office and meeting rooms to video meetings Skype, telephone and email.

But the challenges are deeper than this. When daily physical contact is reduced, the leadership team’s ability to align on business challenges, opportunities and performance is also reduced, just as the leader’s insight into and temperature measurement of the leadership team is challenged. This requires development and training of specific competences and attention to points requiring special focus in order to compensate.

Composing and leading a virtual leadership team is a complex and demanding task that demands special attention if the team is to succeed. A leader of a virtual leadership team must be able to do everything that the leader of a co-located leadership team does – and much more.

An MBA with the master thesis, ‘Leading the Virtual Leadership Team’ and my own experience with working in virtual leadership teams across national borders is the foundation of my sparring with and development of leadership teams in multinational and global businesses. My services are always tailored to the context of the individual organisation.
